Babul sent to jail after 5-day remand over Mitu murder
Former superintendent of police Babul Akter
Former superintendent of police Babul Akter, who was arrested over the killing of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu in 2016, was sent to jail on Monday after the end of his five-day remand.
Officials from Police Bureau of Investigation produced him before a Chattogram Court after the end of the remand.
He was in the chamber of Metropolitan Magistrate Sarwar Jahan but did not give confessional statement under section 164 CrPC, said Kazi Shahabuddin Ahmed, assistant commissioner (Prosecution Division) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police.
Later, the magistrate ordered to send him to jail as PBI did not seek fresh remand prayer for him.
Babul’s lawyer Arifur Rahman said he did not know whether his client gave confessional statement or not.
“If he did not give confessional statement, we will appeal for his bail,” he said.
Mitu's father Mosharraf Hossain filed the case with Panchlaish Police Station last Wednesday naming Babul as the prime accused.
Babul was the complainant of a case filed immediately after murder of Mitu.
The former SP was shown arrested in the case the same day, said Police Bureau of Investigation's Inspector Santosh Kumar Chakma, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case.
The dramatic turnaround from plaintiff to prime accused happened after Babul, summoned for interrogation to Chattogram PBI metro office last Tuesday, could not answer detectives' questions satisfactorily.
