The Department of Environment (Chattogram Division) on Sunday ordered Asian Paper Mill to shut down for polluting a waterbody that drains into the Halda river in Chattogram.

The Department of Environment (Chattogram Division) on Sunday ordered Asian Paper Mill to shut down for polluting a waterbody that drains into the Halda river in Chattogram.

The DoE passed the order after a hearing on the matter, said Muktadir Hasan, assistant director of DoE.

The paper mill was declared shut as it failed to meet four conditions including construction of an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) at their factory.

The factory dumped untreated wastewater into a waterbody that directly connects to Halda river thus polluting it.

The paper mill is located at Nondirhat area of Hathazari upazila in the district.
