People’s participation needed for effective local govt: Speakers

Speakers at a seminar titled ‘Local Governance in Bangladesh: Communication and Development’ said, people need to participate in all the functions of the local governance to make it effective service providing institute.

Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) at Daffodil International University (DIU) organized the seminar at its Dhanmondi campus on Saturday.

Local governance specialist Mizanur Rahman, working at HELVETAS Germany, Bangladesh delivered the key speech at the seminar.

He said, “If people participate in governance, development goes automatically through communication”.

According to him, people’s participation in the Union Parishad is a key player of grassroots development in Bangladesh.

Dr Sheikh Shafiul Islam, Associate Professor, JMC and researcher said, the incumbent government has undertaken an inclusive approach of socio-economic development where the Union Parishad has been emphasized as the focal point.

Saleem Ahmed, Associate Professor & Head of the department delivered welcome speech in the seminar.

He said the students of Journalism and Mass Communication department should have an active role in disseminating the development news.

Aftab Hossain, Senior Lecturer, JMC moderated the seminar attended by the students of the department. After the seminar, a question and answer session was held.
