No bodies of the victims – neither driver nor passengers – have been recovered yet

The search operation for a yellow taxi cab that fell into the Turag river at Aminbazar area in Savar is still ongoing, as no trace of the sunken vehicle has been found yet.

Moreover, rescue divers have not recovered any bodies of the victims – neither driver nor passengers – from the water.

Witnesses said the driver of the cab lost control over steering while trying to overtake a passenger bus on the Dhaka-Aricha highway, and jumped into the river near Aminbazar bridge around 8:30 pm on Sunday.

Later, locals called 999 and called in the fire service to rescue the victims.

On information, four units of the Fire Service went to the spot. Later around 1 am on  Monday, a five-member diving team reached the accident site and started the search operation.

Fire Service (Uttara zone) Commander Anwarul Haque said: "Launching the search was delayed due to strong currents in the river. However, the search is still on, as we could not find any trace of the vehicle."

He also recounted a similar incident that occurred at the exact same spot some nine years ago, when a passenger bus of Boishakhi Paribahan fell into the river, breaking the bridge railings.
