A drug trader was killed in a gunfight with police at Hoaikang Doingakata area in Teknaf Upazila of Cox's Bazar early Saturday

A drug trader was killed in a gunfight with police at Hoaikang Doingakata area in Teknaf Upazila of Cox's Bazar early Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Md Rasel Mahmud, son of Foyez Ahmed of Uttar Lakkhanghona area in Narayanganj. Police claimed that he was accused in a drug-related case.

Three policemen were injured in the incident. They are - SI Burhan Uddin Bhuiyan, Constable Habib Hossain, Sajib Sarkar and Tuhin Hasan.

Pradeep Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Model Police Station, said, acting on information that Rasel went to buy Yaba at the house of Amir Hamza, an accused in a drug case, in Hoaikang Doingakata area at 1:30 am, police conducted a drive there.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, miscreants opened fire on them, triggering the gunfight.

After the gunfight, police took Rasel, who was critically injured in the skirmish, to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex and later shifted him to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Law enforcers recovered 5,000 Yaba pills, an LG, five round cartridges, nine round bullet-shells from the spot, said the OC.
