‘Drug dealer’ killed in Meherpur ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug dealer was killed in what police claimed a gunfight in Gangni upazila of Meherpur early Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Nazmul Hossain, 27, hailing from the same upazila.

Officer-in-Charge of Detective Branch of Meherpur Police Obaidur Rahman confirmed the incident.

Nazmul was an accused in five cases, of which, four were drug related while another was filed for his involvement in a recent attack on the members of Border Guard Bangladesh, the OC said.

Acting on a tip-off that a group of drug peddlers were holding a meeting at Karandi village in the upazila, the DB team conducted a raid in the area around 3:30am, he said.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the drug peddlers opened fire on them, prompting a “gunfight” in retaliation, the police official added.

At one stage, the criminals fled the spot leaving the bullet-hit body of Nazmul.

Police recovered a shutter gun, one kilogramme of cannabis and a motorcycle from the spot.
