Cox’s Bazar: UNHCR special envoy and US film star Angelina Jolie has been visiting Rohingya refugee camps in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar.

The US Hollywood film star went to the refugee camps directly from the Cox's Bazar Airport, Mohammed Abul Kalam Azad, commissioner of the Rohingya, Relief and Repatriation Commission (RRRC), told our local correspondent.

Jolie, a special envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and co-founder of the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative, arrived in the district boarding a plane of Novoair around 10:10am, the official said.

She first meet with the Rohingya refugees at Chakmarkul camp and later she is scheduled to visit two more camps at Nayapara and Leda area in Taknaf, he said.

She might talk to journalists today, he added.

Jolie will meet Rohingya women, who were victims of sexual violence in Myanmar's Rakhine State during a brutal military operation in August 2017.

She will observe UNHCR activities, hold meetings with officials and meet Rohingyas in the camps in her two-day visit in the area, UNB reports quoting officials.

The UNHCR special envoy will talk to media in Cox's Bazar tomorrow afternoon.

Jolie, strongly raised voice against sexual violence of Rohingya Women and Children in Myanmar's Rakhine State.

On November 15, 2017, the Hollywood actress told a Bangladesh delegation in the Canadian city of Vancouver that she was planning to see the Rohingya victims of sexual violence.

Over 800,000 Rohingyas have fled Myanmar since late August 2017, driven out by the military's actions that a UN Fact Finding Mission described as genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
