Awami League-backed mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Atiqul Islam has now urged the Election Commission to reschedule the upcoming city elections due to Saraswati Puja.

Awami League-backed mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Atiqul Islam has now urged the Election Commission to reschedule the upcoming city elections due to Saraswati Puja.

The mayoral aspirant came up with the urge at an election campaign held at Al-Abdi Eidgah grounds in Dhaka's Mirpur area on Thursday.

Atiqul said, "People of all religions live in Bangladesh and everyone has the right to celebrate their own religious festivals. I think if it requires changing the election date due to Saraswati Puja, the Election Commission has to do this."

The elections to DNCC and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) are scheduled for January 30.

On Tuesday, the High Court rejected a petition seeking a deferment of the January 30 election date of Dhaka's two city corporations as it falls in the same day as Saraswati Puja, one of the biggest religious festivals of the country's Hindu community.

On Thursday, an appeal petition was filed with the Supreme Court challenging the High Court order.
