12 of the 16 condemned convicts in Feni's Sonagazi madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder case were shifted to Cumilla central jail on Tuesday morning.

12 of the 16 condemned convicts in Feni's Sonagazi madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder case were shifted to Cumilla central jail on Tuesday morning.

Feni Zila Prison chief Md Didarul Alam said that the condemned convicts were shifted to Cumilla from Feni district jail at around 9:30 am as per the directive from Inspector General of Prison.

The shifted convicts are - ex-Awami League Upazila unit president Ruhul Amin, Shahadat Hossain Shamim, Nur Uddin, Imran Hossain Mamun, Hafez Abdul Quader, Iftekhar Uddin Rana, Councillor Maksud Alam alias Moksud, Saifur Rahman Mohammad Zobair, Javed, Mohiuddin Shakil, Mohammad Shamim, Abdur Rahim Sharif and Absar Uddin.

Convicts in the same case Umme Sultana Popy and Kamrunnahar Moni will be taken to Chattagram central jail on Wednesday morning while Md Ruhul Amin and madrasah principal SM Sirajuddoula will be shifted to Cumilla jail in the afternoon on the same day.

According to the Jail Code, those awarded long term jail or death penalty must be shifted to the central jail from district one for security reason, said Mohamad Rafiqul, senior jail super of Feni district jail.

The convicts are being sent to the central jail for that reason, he said adding that the central jail has many condemn cells with sufficient staff and all necessary arrangements. There is no condemn cell and hanging scaffold at Feni district jail, he added.

On April 6, Sonagazi Islamia Madrasa student Nusrat was set on fire on the roof of a madrasah she attended, allegedly by people loyal to Sirajuddoula whom she had accused of sexually harassing her.

She succumbed to her injuries four days later at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. A case was filed at Sonagazi Police Station on April 8. Police pressed charges in court against 16 people on May 29.

Later on October 24, a tribunal sentenced 16 people to death in the much-talked-about Nusrat murder case in an exceptionally speedy verdict.
