BUET VC refuses to step down

As of now, 13 people have been arrested in the murder case

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Saiful Islam of University of Bangladesh Engineering and Technology (Buet) has refused to step down from his post.

"I did not do anything wrong. So, why should I resign?" he said while replying to a journalist's query after offering Fateha at the grave of slain Buet student Abrar Fahad in Kustia on Wednesday.

Prof Saiful Islam said he reached the spot as soon as he had heard about the incident around 4am.

"The hall provost came to know about the incident around 3am and informed me," he added.

Mentioning that necessary legal steps were taken immediately after the incident, he said: "We have made an inquiry in the meantime. The culprits have already been arrested."

Abrar Fahad, a second year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the university, was beaten to death on Monday.

Some Chhatra League leaders have been accused of beating him for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Following the incident, Abrar's father filed a murder case against 19 people with Chawkbazar police station on Monday evening.

As of now, 13 people have been arrested in the murder case.
