A dengue-infected college student died on the way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital while a total of 408 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country in 24 hours till Saturday morning

The deceased is Tarek, 18, son of Mahim Uddin of Shamnagar village of Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia and a student of Khalishakundi Degree College in Kushtia.

Kushtia civil surgeon Rowshan Ara said Tarek was admitted with dengue at Mirpur Upazila Health Complex on Friday and shifted to Kushtia General Hospital as his condition deteriorated on Saturday morning.

The physicians of Kushtia Hospital referred him to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital and he died on way to the hospital at 11:00am.

Currently 72 dengue patients are taking treatment for dengue in the district, he said.

Meanwhile, among the new dengue patients across the country, 135 were hospitalised in Dhaka and 273 in other parts of the country, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Currently 2,252 patients, including 917 in the capital, are being treated at hospitals, it said.

Bangladesh has seen a massive outbreak of mosquito-borne disease dengue this year.

Since January, 84,397 people were hospitalised with dengue, most of them in Dhaka. Of them, 81,942 have made full recovery.

Since January, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) received information about 203 dengue-related deaths. It has so far reviewed 116 cases and confirmed 68 dengue deaths.
